What is chronic fatigue syndrome?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a syndrome, which is caused by a chronic inflammatory reaction in the body and may be the culprit of your fatigue symptoms.

Its main characteristic is severe prolonged fatigue, which seriously affects physical and mental functioning.

The term Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) literally means inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Chronic fatigue syndrome has several distinct characteristics. The complaints are:

  • Severe fatigue symptoms;
  • Inexplicable;
  • Continuous presence;
  • New or have clear beginnings (not present all of life)

Symptoms chronic fatigue syndrome - severe fatigue symptoms.

Most people have many fatigue symptoms and experience ongoing fatigue. Some people feel tired continuously and others alternately: tired at times, fit at others.

Fatigue can manifest itself in a variety of symptoms such as headaches, symptoms in the neck, shoulder or back, memory loss or feeling constantly lame or lifeless.

Long-term fatigue or overtiredness can have many causes such as structural lack of sleep or stress.

Very often, however, there is a connection with other medical conditions such as thyroid problems, diabetes or cardiovascular disease, for example. There may also be anemia, hormone imbalance or deficiencies in certain nutrients.

Two years ago, I started feeling very tired and lame. I was in a busy phase with small children and a tough job. The family doctor thought I was toward burnout. I started to slow down and work less. Unfortunately, this did not help: the symptoms only got worse. Fortunately, through treatment at BodySwitch, I found out, what was causing my symptoms. I have had to make profound adjustments to my lifestyle and diet, but I feel fit and energetic again.

Treatment process fatigue complaints

Step 1: Analysis

We start treatment with a comprehensive analysis. To find out where your symptoms are coming from, it is necessary for us to know a lot about you. We collect this information by:

  • a comprehensive online questionnaire
  • a food diary
  • a comprehensive intake interview
  • Additional laboratory tests (blood and stool)

By analyzing all available information, we gain insight into the factors that may play a role in causing the symptoms. Chronic inflammation in the gut, stress and a compromised immune system often play a role in fatigue symptoms.

Step 2: Personalized treatment plan

Based on the results of the analysis phase, we will create a personalized treatment plan for you. This is based on the four pillars: nutrition, supplementation, exercise and mindset.

The treatment plan focuses on addressing the factors that cause the disease. With proper nutrition and supplementation, the immune system is calmed and harmful substances are removed.

Proper nutrition supported by supplements prevents further stimulation of the immune system. Inflammation in the intestines is calmed and nutritional deficiencies replenished.

You usually feel more energetic and fitter again soon.

Step 3: Guidance

The results of your treatment depend in part on your motivation and discipline. To guide you through this, our specialists pay close attention to coaching and knowledge transfer. We also provide comprehensive exercise advice specific to your conditioning situation.

To properly monitor progress, we schedule regular follow-up consultations. We will discuss the interim results with you and, if necessary, have additional laboratory tests done. If warranted, we make interim adjustments to the treatment plan.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and fatigue symptoms: background and insights

Almost all cases of chronic fatigue syndrome involve chronic, low-grade inflammation of the intestines. This can be caused by many factors. In chronic inflammation of the intestines, our immune system is constantly active. This consumes a lot of energy, causing fatigue and exhaustion.

Just chronic low-grade inflammation in the gut is not enough to develop chronic fatigue syndrome. There is almost always an acute stress-inducing moment when this condition manifests itself. Common are an infection (bacteria or virus), but also sometimes after acute exhaustion (for example, having performed a very intense or sustained sporting effort with little training).

In acute infections, a functioning immune system is essential. If the immune system is chronically activated, it can be harmful to the body. To kill harmful invaders, the immune system produces toxins. These can also destroy the body’s own cells.

Damage to the body’s own cells then in turn triggers activation of the immune system. Thus a negative spiral is created and this problem maintains itself.
